Kitchen Fire!
Today marks a moment in history. It’s the first time I’ve ever set anything on fire in my kitchen. I always wondered what I would do if I set something on fire while cooking, I guess today was that day. Luckily everything is okay and there was no damage to anything but my ego. I don’t even have a great heroic story to tell my kids someday…I mean I burned a bagel, C’mon!
Basically I put a Whole Wheat Bagel Thin in my toaster oven and looked away to answer the phone. Moments later, I smelled my bagel. It actually didn’t smell like fire, it smelled like a bagel. I walked over to the kitchen and stood in shock that one half was literally on fire in the toaster oven. I ran through all the scenarios that they teach you in school.
What do you do with a kitchen fire, is it a grease fire or a ‘regular’ fire? Do you hit it with a towel like in the movies, throw water on it, throw baking soda on it, spray it with a fire extinguisher (which I don’t have), will it explode in my face when I open the toaster oven door??
I wasn’t quite sure, so I grabbed a towel, covered my face, stood to the side, opened the door and ducked. When nothing came blazing out I grabbed the closest glass, filled it with water and threw it at the toaster oven (the water, not the glass). I did this twice and the fire was gone. I then ran around opening all the doors/windows and stood on a chair waving a towel in the air near the smoke detector to keep it from going off.
Epic Cooking Fail!
Ah well…lessoned learned. I’m still not entirely sure how to deal with kitchen fires, but this one is out and I’m no longer taking calls while toasting a bagel. Just so you know, if you get my voicemail in the morning, blame it on the bagel!
And that, my friends is what I did today…how was your Wednesday?
